Greatest Reality Show On Television

As far as reality shows go, The Amazing Race, in my opinion, is the best show on television.   The format is unique; the scenery unbeatable.  Eleven teams of two compete in a race around the world.  There have been married couples, dating couples, best friends, mothers and sons, fathers and daughters. Often times the pair is doing the race together to strengthen their relationship.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. The race has also caused strong relationships to falter.  Situations often arise on the race  that don’t normally occur in the day-to-day life of the racers.

Racers not only have to interact with their partner, but also with the other teams on the race, and the production crew assigned to each team.  I imagine life can get pretty stressful.  The teams have to follow a series of directions, traveling from place to place, usually in unfamiliar countries.  They have to communicate their desires and needs to people who may or may not speak English.  They often have to perform tasks native to the country they are in. Cultures clash, tempers flare.

The Amazing Race won the first Emmy award ever presented for a reality show, in 2003 for Outstanding Reality-Competition Show.   The Amazing Race has won this award every year since then.

The Amazing Race premieres Sunday, September 28 on CBS. Phil Keoghan returns as host.
