Meet the Teams of The Amazing Race 13

The six-time Emmy Award winning reality program, The Amazing Race, premieres this Sunday, September 28, on CBS. This is the 13th edition of the hit show.  Eleven teams take off from the Los Angeles Coliseum to compete in a race around the world for the $1 million prize.   The race will last 23 days, span five continents, and encompass over 30,000 miles.

Here’s your chance to meet the teams before the race begins, with this blogger’s opinions about each team based on their interviews and my gut feelings.

Anthony & Stephanie

Anthony & Stephanie

Anthony & Stephanie are a dating couple who seem to constantly be at odds.  They are very athletic, competitive and street-smart, but they both also have strong opinions and they don’t necessarily agree, which causes a lot of bickering.  Anthony is adventurous, Stephanie is outgoing.  One of their biggest weaknesses, besides their constant bickering, is that Stephanie cannot read maps.  Hopefully she can follow directions and let Anthony navigate.

My opinion: I don’t see this team going very far in the race.

Ken & Tina

Ken is a former NFL player for the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Chargers.  Tina is a company president.  They are married, but separated, and hope that the race will help them reconcile and strengthen their marriage.  They have traveled extensively and are adventurous.   Tina is intelligent, strategic and detail-oriented; Ken is strong, competitive and good with people.  Together they hope their combined skills are enough to win this race.

My opinion: I haven’t formed any opinions about this couple yet.

Kelly & Christy

Kelly & Christy

These best friends are both divorced and went through a tough year last year.  They know how to make each other laugh, and they also know how to get what they want.  Kelly can be impatient and Christy is temperamental, traits they know they need to overcome if they want to win this race.  And they do want to win.  They plan on being the first all-female team to win The Amazing Race.

My opinion: I have a feeling this team is going to annoy me from the beginning.

Anita & Arthur

Anita & Arthur

The oldest team on this race, Anita and Arthur are a very down-to-earth couple.  They both believe in the basic goodness of people.  Anita was attracted to The Amazing Race because of the chance to visit other countries and experience different cultures.  Arthur describes Anita as controlled chaos’.  She’s very optimistic about life and people.  Arthur stays focused and in control, although Anita says he tends to over-analyze things.  They say they may be youth-challenged, but see the other teams as age-challenged.  They believe they have an advantage over the other teams because Anita and Arthur have been where the teams are in life, but the other teams have not yet experienced where Anita and Arthur are.

My opinion:  I really like this team.  Since they seem to be looking for the experience rather than the money, I think they’ll go far, just being themselves.

Nick & Starr

Nick & Starr

This brother & sister team has traveled extensively together, so they know each other’s quirks and abilities.  They recently backpacked from Germany to Paris.  Nick’s weakness, according to Starr, is that he thinks things through before acting upon them, while Starr is more spontaneous.  They describe themselves as competitive, smart, good looking and likeable, with a lot of common sense.  They hope that common sense gets them far in the game.

My opinion: I think these two are going to be ruthless and conniving.  The other teams need to watch out for this team.

Toni & Dallas

Money is secondary to this team.  The opportunity to see the world and spend time together is what’s driving this mother-son team. Dallas describes his mom as meticulous and a leader, and says she thinks she’s always right just because she’s the mom.  Toni admits that she’s going to have to let Dallas think for himself and will try not to mother him too much.  She says Dallas is persuasive and knows how to get what he wants, but that he sometimes loses focus.

My opinion: My favorite of the teams.  They need to lose the parent/child roles and focus on the task at hand.  Parent/child teams have not fared well in the past.

Mark & Bill

Mark & Bill

Mark and Bill are the beloved geeks of the race.  They’re into all things geeky: comic books, science fiction, computers, and gaming.  They view the race as the ultimate game played on the biggest game board in the world.  Mark is funny, smart and adventurous; Bill is cautious and easy-going.  They hope this combination will take them to the finish line.

My opinion:  These guys just might go far, as long as Bill isn’t too cautious.

Note:  There’s nothing wrong with being a geek.  I love geeks.  Geeks are sexy.  In fact, I married one.

Aja & Ty

Aja & Ty

Aja & Ty are in a long-distance relationship and are excited about being able to spend an extended period of time together.  Aja is most looking forward to experiencing other cultures and countries.  Ty is most looking forward to spending time with Aja.  Aja is energetic, insightful, but easily upset.  Ty is ultra-competitive.  They hope their experiences on the race will help them determine whether or not they can close the distance and be together as a couple.

My opinion:  No.  I don’t think they’ll survive after the race.  And, they’re not going to be in the race for long either.

Andrew & Dan

Andrew & Dan

This team of fraternity brothers has already been nicknamed “Superbad”. Dan is well traveled and has great leadership qualities, while Andrew is calm and smart.  Dan says that Andrew’s lack of travel experience, and his fitness level are weaknesses that their team will strive to overcome.  They feel that if they can just be themselves and have a good time, they will prevail to win The Amazing Race.

My opinion:  May be a fun team, but I can see a tendency to be cocky.

Marisa & Brooke

Marisa & Brooke

You knew there had to be a token blonde team, and Marisa & Brooke are it this time around.  These southern belles are best friends who have never had a fight.  They have both traveled extensively.  Marisa knows Swahili and can read Hebrew; Brooke can speak Spanish.  Marisa is ambitious and focused, while Brooke has a take-charge attitude.  They feel that a combination of their abilities, good team communication and encouragement towards their teammate will make them fierce competitors.

My opinion: There’s a first time for everything, and if nothing else, they’ll have their first fight on the race.

Terence & Sarah

Terence & Sarah

Terence is emotional; Sarah is low maintenance.  Terence is athletic, having finished the last 2 New York City marathons in less than 3 hours.  Sarah is driven.  They are fearless, adventurous and energetic.  When they travel together, it’s usually spontaneous and by the seat of their pants, which they believe will help them in the spontaneity of The Amazing Race.  They are both too intense, which they feel is a weakness for their team.  They think their assets complement each other and they hope to get far in the race.

My opinion: Something about this team makes me think Jonathan & Victoria, only in reverse.

The Amazing Race premieres Sunday, September 28 on CBS, after 60 Minutes.  Start time is 8pm eastern, 7pm central, but start time could be delayed if the earlier NFL games on CBS run long.
