The seven teams left flew from New Zealand to Cambodia to start this leg of the race. The first two teams of Ken & Tina and Terence & Sarah were able to make the first flight out of New Zealand. Terence & Sarah were trying so hard to get to the airport early that Terence got a speeding ticket, going over 100km.
Christy & Kelly, Dallas & Toni, Nick & Starr and Andrew & Dan all made the 2nd flight, leaving that same day. Ty & Aja weren’t able to get on that flight, and had to wait until the next day before they could leave New Zealand.
The first two flights met up in Singapore, so six of the seven teams were together continuing on to Cambodia. Once in Cambodia, teams had to find a roadside gas pumping station at Siem Reap. There, teams had to choose a truck and hand pump 25 liters of diesel fuel into the truck’s fuel tank. Once done, they climbed into the back of the truck and were driven to Siem Reap Harbor.
Having left the fueling station in first place, siblings Nick & Starr were enjoying a comfortable lead until Starr was worried that they were going the wrong direction. She made the driver stop so she could ask directions of some locals. While stopped, three other teams passed them, putting Nick & Starr in fourth place.
At the harbor, teams had to get into traditional Cambodian boats and be taken to a floating restaurant. Ken & Tina started out in first place, but were soon passed by several teams. However, Terence & Sarah had boat problems, and soon fell behind again.
The clue at the restaurant was for a Detour. Teams had to choose between Village Life and Village Work. In Village Life, teams had to find 3 items in 3 different locations scattered among the floating city ~ a set of chattering teeth at the dentist’s office, a doll from the tailor, and a basketball from the floating basketball court. Before teams could receive their basketball however, each member had to make a basket.
In Village Work, teams had to search through muddy water for two fishing traps filled with fish to receive their next clue.
Toni & Dallas, Nick & Starr and Andrew & Dan all chose Village Work. Ken & Tina, Terence & Sarah and Christy & Kelly chose Village Life. Christy & Kelly arrived at the basketball court before they’d gotten their Detour clue at the restaurant, so they had to go get the clue and then return to the basketball court.
Ty & Aja arrived at the fishing traps for Village Work just as Andrew & Dan, in sixth place, were completing the task.
After completing the Detour, teams were sent to Angkor Wat, a 12th Century temple. At Angkor Wat, teams encountered a Road Block. In this Road Block, one teammate had to search the grounds for the Chamber of Echoes. Once they found this small room, they had to thump their chest in such a way that it echoed throughout the room, and then take their next clue, which was written on a stone tablet.
One by one, teammates found the chamber, thumped their chest, and took their next clue, which sent them to the Pit stop at Bayon Temple, a 12th Century Buddhist temple.
Nick & Starr were the first team to arrive at the Pit Stop. They won a trip to St. John from Travelocity. Aja & Ty stepped on the mat last. I was really hoping that Phil would tell them that this was a non-elimination leg, but no such luck. Terence & Sarah arrived in third place. Because they received a speeding ticket during this leg, they have to endure a 30-minute penalty, which will occur at the beginning of the next leg, causing them to leave the Pit Stop 30 minutes later than they would have normally. This could hurt them significantly if they fall behind too many other teams.
I would imagine though that this next leg is going to be a non-elimination leg, since there are only six teams left, and there are three non-elimination legs.
Teams, in order of arrival for this leg:
1) Nick & Starr
2) Toni & Dallas
3) Terence & Sarah (30 minute penalty for start of next leg)
4) Ken & Tina
5) Kelly & Christy
6) Andrew & Dan
Ty & Aja – ELIMINATED
