Last night’s episode of The Amazing Race was a sad one.  An unprecedented mistake by Toni & Dallas enables frat boys Andrew & Dan to grab a spot in the final three teams racing for the $1 million.  Mom & son were my choice to go all the way, and I think they would have if Dallas hadn’t lost the passports and money.  They could have overcome the lack of money, but with no passports, they were screwed.

Toni & Dallas left the Pit Stop first and traveled by taxi to a nuclear submarine.  There, teams had to search the sub for an actor who appeared in the movie “The Hunt for Red October”.  The teams of Toni & Dallas, Nick & Starr, and Ken & Tina all searched the sub at the same time, asking various sailors for the clue before they found the right person.

The next clue sent teams to the Graveyard of Fallen Monuments, an outdoor museum of statues.  Andrew & Dan thought they had an advantage in getting a taxi driver who spoke English, but any advantage dissolved when the driver took them to the wrong park.

At the Graveyard of Fallen Monuments, the clue was for a Road Block.  One team member had to search for statues of Lenin & Stalin, then travel to a bookstore and give the clerk the combined number.  If correct, the clerk would hand them a book with their next clue.  Team members would then have to turn to the correct page in the book, the page number being the combined number of statues, to find the clue.

There were 6 statues of Lenin and 2 statues of Stalin, combined, the correct number was 62.  Page 62 in the book gave them an address to the author’s house, where their teammate and the next clue would be waiting.

If teams gave the bookstore clerk the wrong number, they would have to wait 10 minutes before they could make another attempt at the correct number.

To help in solving the Road Block, teams were given the Cyrillic spellings of Lenin & Stalin.

Nick & Starr were first at the Road Block, with Nick searching for the statues.  Toni & Dallas were second, with Dallas doing the road block.  We see Toni make a point of giving Dallas the bag with the money and the passports, so this was a clue of what was to come.  Kenny & Tina arrived third, with Tina looking for Lenin & Stalin.

Nick made quick work of his search; Dallas struggled, not knowing Lenin & Stalin. Andrew got help from a local who helped him find the statues.

Nick got the number 62 right on his first attempt, and was given the book to find his next clue.  Dallas first guessed 36, thinking he had 3 Lenin’s and 6 Stalin’s.  Waiting 10 minutes to guess again, he guessed 46, which was again wrong.  Tina arrived, guessing 61, and having to wait.  During the wait, she and Dallas compared notes.  Dallas then guessed 63, still wrong.  Tina then guessed 62, and got the book.  She then told Dallas to guess 62.

Once at the apartment building, Tina told Ken and Toni that she had helped Dallas.  When Dallas arrived at the apartment building and left the cab, he realized as soon as the cab drove off that he didn’t have the money bag.

He told his mom what he had done as Dan stood in the background with a look of hop on his face.  The frat boys were catching another break.  Toni asked Dan for some money so they could get a taxi, but Andrew had all their money.

The next clue directed teams to travel by taxi to Sokol’niky children’s park and find a woman with Shetland pony to receive their next clue.  Starr didn’t know what a Shetland pony was, evidently, as she was wondering in the taxi if it was some kind of ponytail hairstyle.

Toni & Dallas got some money from some locals, but elected to take the Metro rather than a taxi since it was cheaper, not realizing their clue specifically said to take a taxi.

At the park, Nick & Starr and Ken & Tina found the woman, and got the clue which was for a Detour.  The woman wouldn’t give Toni & Dallas their clue since they had not arrived by taxi.  They wound up having to ask for more money and go back to where they had started to get a taxi.  Andrew & Dan had to do their Speed Bump before they could get the clue for the Detour.

The Speed Bump required the uncoordinated duo to learn and perform a traditional Russian dance before they got their clue.  After two attempts, the Russian instructor deemed that they were good enough, so they continued on.

The Detour choices were Ride The Rails or Ride The Lines.  In Ride The Rails, teams had to take a Metro to Ulitsa station and find a marked snack shop.  There they were to get a traditional pastry and find the clue on the wrapper that would send them to another Metro, to the statue of the inventor of the Cyrillic alphabet.  Nearby they would find a babushka who would give them a postcard of their next destination in exchange for the pastry.

In Ride The Lines, teams had to take a trolley bus to Krasndsel’skaya, and find key maker who would give them a key to a storage locker.  Then they had to get another trolley bus, go to the station and find the locker that matched their key.  Inside the locker would be the postcard of their next destination.

Nick & Starr chose Ride The Rails, since Nick was a New Yorker and was used to the subways.  Ken & Tina chose Ride The Lines, however, initially they got on a regular bus instead of a trolley bus.  Once they realized their mistake, they went back to the Detour start and found the trolley bus.  Andrew & Dan also chose Ride The Lines.

Nick & Starr, Ken & Tina and Andrew & Dan all got their postcards, which told them to search the grounds of the destination pictured to find their next clue.

Nick & Starr found the clue box with the final clue sending them to the Pit Stop.  They were first, winning a trip for 2 to Anguilla Island and a spot in the final three.

Andrew & Dan also found the clue, but Kenny & Tina were having trouble.  Seeing Andrew & Dan, and also Phil and the mat, they ran straight for the Pit Stop.

Andrew & Dan were second, securing their spot in the finals.  Phil informed Kenny & Tina that although they arrived third, they did not find the final clue, and had to go back and get it before checking in.

After searching and searching, they finally found the clue box, granting them the third spot in the finals.

Phil met Toni & Dallas on the streets of Moscow and informed them that they had been eliminated.  Toni said that this was the best experience of her life and was glad that Dallas was her son.  Dallas felt bad for letting his mom down, but Toni told him it wasn’t his fault.

Teams, in order of arrival:

  1. Nick & Starr
  2. Andrew & Dan
  3. Ken & Tina
  4. Toni & Dallas — ELIMINATED
