Kelly & Christy were still fighting with Nick & Starr at the start of this episode. Come on Christy, maybe Starr knocked your sports bra off the ledge and maybe she didn’t — but, it’s a freakin’ bra! Grow up and let it go already.
Ok, on to this week’s recap:
Ken & Tina, having arrived first at the Pit Stop, were the first team to depart. The first clue of the leg directed teams to fly 6,900 miles to Auckland, New Zealand. Once in Auckland, they were to drive to Gulf Harbor and find a Gordian knot.
Ty & Aja argued in the taxi on the way to the airport, and they were still arguing at the airport. Aja called Ty a dictator and Ty told Aja she had moods.
All eight teams were on the same flight from La Paz, Bolivia to Auckland, New Zealand. Once landed in New Zealand, Terence & Sarah were the first to find the waiting cars and leave the airport. Ken & Tina and Andrew & Dan were right behind them. The other teams had trouble finding the cars. Terence & Sarah took a wrong turn, causing them to backtrack and lose their lead.
On the drive from the airport to Gulf Harbor, Aja & Ty had a blowout — a tire blowout. Having never changed a tire before, Ty didn’t look too confident. Aja flagged down a passing motorist, who changed the tire for them so they could be on their way. At this point, they were only ahead of the blondes.
Arriving at Gulf Harbor, teams had to locate and untie a Gordian knot in order to find their next clue. The clues were inside the knots. Untying the knot, teams found the next clue, which sent them to the summit of Mount Eden, an inactive volcano. The clue was for a Road Block. One team member had to choose a tattoo pattern and scan a group of warriors to find the one who had the matching tattoo in order to get their next clue. If they were wrong, they had to select another tattoo and repeat the task.
There was also a Fast Forward. If a team completes a Fast Forward successfully, they get to skip all other tasks in the leg and go straight to the Pit Stop.
Ken & Tina and Andrew & Dan both opted to try for the Fast Forward. Only one team could complete it however, so it was a race to get to the Fast Forward location.
In order to successfully complete the Fast Forward, the team had to climb to the top of the tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere, Auckland Sky Tower, and retrieve a Travelocity Roaming Gnome. Ken & Tina got there first, so Andrew & Dan headed back to do the Road Block.
Matching the tattoos on the scary warriors was harder than everyone thought at first. One by one, teams completed the Road Block and received the next clue, which sent them to City Life Hotel. At City Life Hotel, the teams had to go to the top of the hotel, and use binoculars to scan the surrounding city and find one of eight Travelocity Roaming Gnomes. Once they spotted a gnome, they had to retrieve it and take it with them.
While teams were completing the Road Block and searching for their gnomes, Ken & Tina were climbing the Auckland Sky Tower. Tina’s fear of heights caused some momentary panic, but they managed to successfully complete the Fast Forward. They were instructed then to take a helicopter to the Summerhill sheep farm, the Pit Stop on this leg. For checking in first, they received a 7-night trip to Rio de Janeiro during Carnivale. Phil’s dad was the guest greeter on the mat at this Pit Stop.
Teams retrieved their gnomes, which held their next clue — drive to Te Puke and find the KIWI 360 landmark. At the KIWI 360, teams were faced with a Detour — Matter of Time or Matter of Skill.
In Matter of Time, teams had to crush kiwis with their feet and squeeze out 12 quarts of juice. After squeezing out the juice, each team member had to drink a huge glass of juice to receive the next clue. In Matter of Skill, teams had to assemble two Blokarts and drive them around the track 3 times to receive the clue.
All teams initially chose Matter of Time, but after getting frustrated because they weren’t squeezing the fruits very quickly, Toni & Dallas, Nick & Starr, Andrew & Dan, and Ty & Aja wound up switching to Matter of Skill. Terence & Sarah quickly finished Matter of Time, and were directed to the Pit Stop.
At Matter of Skill, as Starr was heading around the track in her Blokart, the contraption took a tumble and she hurt her arm. She thought maybe it was broken, but it just seemed really banged up. Ty & Aja couldn’t get the knots right on their karts, and that slowed them down.
The blondes had been really far behind this entire leg, but Ty & Aja’s troubles were making it a close race between the two teams. In the end, Marisa & Brooke arrived at the Pit Stop last, and were eliminated.
Teams, in order of arrival:
- Ken & Tina
- Terence & Sarah
- Kelly & Christy
- Toni & Dallas
- Nick & Starr
- Andrew & Dan
- Ty & Aja
- Marisa & Brooke - ELIMINATED
In episode 4, the remaining eight teams of the Amazing Race finally get to leave South America. They head to New Zealand — host Phil Keoghan’s homeland. This episode, titled “I Wonder if They Like Blondes in New Zealandâ€, pits the eight teams against each other as they fly out of South America to their new destination, all on the same flight. One team breaks down at the side of the road, a member of another team fears a broken bone, and one team fights amongst themselves.
Although this is the third time that The Amazing Race has been in New Zealand in thirteen seasons, it is the first time that Phil’s dad has experienced the up-close thrill of the race. Mr. Keoghan joins his son on the mat at the Pit Stop to welcome the racers to New Zealand.

Mark & Bill, the self-proclaimed comic book geeks, were the third team eliminated on The Amazing Race 13. Anita & Arthur and Anthony & Stephanie, already ensconsed at Elimination Station, were anxiously awaiting the new team’s arrival. Since they didn’t know who it would be, they were doing a lot of speculating before Mark & Bill arrived.
Once the geeks got out of the taxi, the previous teams were shocked to see who their new housemates were. It made Mark feel good that Arthur & Anita and Stephanie & Anthony were surprised. He said it was much better than getting an we knew it would be you’ reaction.
Mark & Bill explained to the other two teams what had happened to cause their elimination, drawing sympathy from Anita. The newcomers were shown around the house, and Mark & Bill discovered Mexican wrestling masks on their beds. All teams then went out to explore the sights of Acapulco. The three teams were treated to a Luchadore, or Mexican wrestling, exhibition. While the beekeepers and the geeks were obviously enjoying themselves, Anthony & Stephanie walked out and waited for the rest on the street.
Mark lamented that Anthony & Stephanie weren’t enjoying themselves, and couldn’t believe that they were able to spend time in another country without experiencing anything outside their comfort zone.
Mark & Bill Arrive at Elimination Station
I wrote this earlier in the week and thought I had posted it. Sorry!
The episode started off with an argument between Christy and Starr, with Christy accusing Starr of pushing her sports bra off a ledge. Maybe Starr did, but I think Christy’s reaction was just a little over the top.
Since separated couple Ken & Tina were the first to arrive at the Pit Stop, they were the first to leave for this leg. The clue told them to fly to La Paz, Bolivia, and go to the statue of Simon Bolivar. Once at the statue, teams would have to search the morning newspaper for a classified ad that was their next clue. After landing in Bolivia, some teams were having difficulty breathing in the higher altitude.
All teams arrived at the statue and had to camp out overnight to wait for the paper delivery. Once morning arrived, so did the newspapers. Teams rushed to grab a paper and start looking for the clue. As teams scoured the ads, they slowly realized that the ad they were looking for directed them to the Narvaez Hat Shop, where they had to buy a Cholita hat in order to receive their next clue.
This clue was a Detour. In this Detour, teams had the choice of Bumpy Ride or Musical March. In Bumpy Ride, teams had to travel on foot to a nearby market, select handcrafted bicycles and ride them through cobblestone streets to the Plaza Abaroa to receive their next clue. In Musical March, teams had to go on foot to two nearby Plazas, picking up band members along the way, and then deliver the bands to a bandleader in Plaza Abaroa in order to get their next clue.
Teams were warned that there was a U-Turn at the end of each task. In a U-Turn, one team can select a team that they believe is behind them, forcing the selected team to turn around and perform the second task of the Detour.
The teams of Marisa & Brooke and Andrew & Dan chose Musical March. The others teams chose Bumpy Ride. Terence & Sarah and Mark & Bill both got into cabs to head to the Mercado to select their bikes. Terence & Sarah soon realized that the clue said to walk, so they had the cab take them back to Plaza Abaroa so they could start over on foot. Mark & Bill, however, didn’t realize their mistake until much later.
After some spills and out-of-control bikes, all teams successfully completed the Detour and received the next clue, which sent them to Los Titanes del Ring. Once there, the next clue was a Road Block. In this Road Block, one person had to learn six fighting moves and then get into the ring and fight a cholita. This took several teams by surprise, since a fighting cholita is a female. Once inside the ring, the teammate performing this Road Block had to perform the six fighting moves successfully before receiving their next clue. Marisa and Sarah each had to take two attempts before receiving the clue, Mark got it in three. The rest of the teams got it right the first time.
The clue they received at Los Titanes del Ring sent them to the Pit Stop for this leg. In the taxi on the way to the Pit Stop, Mark & Bill realized that they had read the earlier clue wrong and took a taxi to the Bumpy Ride Detour, instead of walking.
Ken & Tina were the first to check in at the Pit Stop, for the second leg in a row. For coming in first this time, they won a 7-night trip to Cabo San Lucas from Travelocity. Mark & Bill hit the mat in eighth place, but because they received a time penalty for misreading a previous clue, they were required to wait 30 minutes before Phil could check them in. Kelly & Christy were the last to arrive, but they arrived before the geeks’ 30 minute penalty was up, so they were checked in as the eighth team, making Mark & Bill ninth, and the team eliminated in this leg.
The teams, in order of check-in at the Pit Stop:
1. Ken & Tina
2. Toni & Dallas
3. Terence & Sarah
4. Marisa & Brooke
5. Aja & Ty
6. Nick & Starr
7. Andrew & Dan
8. Kelly & Christy
Mark & Bill ELIMINATED

Eliminated in the second leg of the race, dating couple Anthony and Stephanie arrive at Elimination Station in Acapulco, joining beekeepers Anita and Arthur.
As Anita and Arthur wait for the arrival of the team, Anita claims that she has butterflies in her stomach, and laments that they have no idea which team will be joining them at the house. Anthony and Stephanie arrive, and Anita expresses her surprise that they were eliminated from the race.
Once settled in, the two couples sit down to a celebration and later take a walk in the town. Anthony and Stephanie are pleased to discover that Anita and Arthur have similar family values as they do, and are glad that there’s someone else who knows how they feel about being eliminated from the race. Anthony and Stephanie believe that their lack of travel experience had a lot to do with their elimination.
Asked who he think will win, Anthony predicts Terence and Sarah will go all the way, saying that their Manhattan attitude will carry them far.
Anthony and Stephanie arrive at Elimination Station.
After leaving Los Angeles for the start of the race, the teams of The Amazing Race 13 headed for Brazil. The first two legs have been spent in this South American country.
In the first leg, teams flew to Salvador, which is the third largest city in Brazil. Formerly known as Sao Salvador, it is also the oldest city in Brazil, and capital of the state of Bahia. This tropical city located near the equator has its roots in African and Portuguese culture. It’s a major shipping port for tobacco, hardwoods, and sugar.
The first Pit Stop was at the Forte Sao Marcelo in Salvador. This fort in the bay used to protect the city from pirates.
For the second leg of The Amazing Race, teams flew from Salvador to Fortaleza Brazil. Fortaleza is located in the state of Ceara, in northeast Brazil. This major fishing port is also the fastest growing tourist destination in the region.
Cidade da Crianca was the Pit Stop for this leg of the race. Cidade da Crianca means “City of the Childâ€. It is a 70-acre park dedicated to children. It features lakes, walkways, a children’s playground, zoo, aquatic center, planetarium and more. Cidade da Crianca sounds like a great place.
Next destination: La Paz, Bolivia

Siblings Nick and Starr were the first team to arrive at the Pit Stop, so they were the first team to depart the next morning. Their clue instructed them to fly to Fortaleza, Brazil. Once landed, they were to take a taxi to Plaza do Cumbuco for their next clue.
At the airport, Nick & Starr and Tina & Ken searched for an earlier flight than the 11:30am that they were told was available. Finding a flight that left at 6:45am, the teams were rejoicing until they were told there was only one seat available. As other teams started to arrive, the announcement was made that the airline was switching to a larger plane so that everyone would be able to make the flight. Believing it was all due to her whining, er persistence; Tina made sure all the other teams knew they wouldn’t be on this flight if it weren’t for her. The other teams all bowed at Tina’s feet — not.
Terence and Sarah had been arguing amongst themselves because Sarah had the gall to talk to the other teams at the Pit Stop. Terence threw a temper tantrum because Sarah wasn’t paying attention to him. To further his grumpy mood, he hit his head on the taxi’s trunk lid and got a little boo-boo.
Since there were no assigned seats on the flight of Queen Tina, Terence and Sarah staked their place at the head of the line, with the other teams right behind them. Once Tina had quit crowing about her miraculous achievement, she and Ken cut right to the front of the line, causing the already pissed-off Terence to get even madder and raise his voice. Not a good thing to do to the estranged wife of an ex-NFL player, especially with said ex-NFL player standing right behind you. Finally deciding to be the bigger man, he apologized to Ken for yelling at his wife
Since all teams were on the same flight to Fortaleza, it was a mad dash to the taxi stand. Arriving at Plaza do Cumbuco, the teams encountered a Detour, Beach It or Dock It. In Beach It, teams had to travel by dune buggy to a nearby beach, and with the help of a two-man crew, roll a boat on logs across the beach and into the water. In Dock It, teams had to travel by dune buggy to a container yard at a nearby port and search for a container that contained their next clue, after searching through a computer listing for the container number contained in their clue.
One by one, as teams arrived at the Detour, most of them chose Beach It, except for geeks Mark & Bill, and blondes Marisa & Brooke. Marisa & Brooke went the wrong direction, and wound up at Beach It, so they elected to stay and do that Detour instead of what they had originally planned.
Terence and Sarah completed the Detour first, receiving the next clue, which told them to take a taxi to Parque de Vaquejada. Not seeing the red & yellow route markers directing them to the taxi parking, they took off down the beach in search of a taxi. The other teams, upon getting their boat to the water, had no problem locating a taxi. Kelly & Christy, however, thought they were missing a part of their Detour, and were searching for a container, instructions that were part of the Dock It Detour. After digging in the sand, and watching other teams run on by, they gave up and headed for their taxi. There, reading the Detour clue again, they realized they were looking for something they didn’t need, and had wasted a lot of time.
Terence and Sarah were frustrated, running up and down the road looking for a taxi as other teams passed them, when Dallas & Toni stopped and told them where the taxis were.
At Parque de Vaquejada, teams encountered a Road Block. One team member had to locate the name of their next destination written somewhere along a wall. Since the writing on the wall was Portuguese, the racers had their work cut out for them. Once they found their next destination, Cidade da Crianca, and repeated the name to a local man, he would hand them their next clue.
Members of each team puzzled over the Road Block, trying to make some sense of the muddle of words written on the wall. Finally, one by one, they came upon a list of names on the wall, and wrote each one down, hoping that one of the phrases was the one they needed. As each team member recited the list of names, the local man gave them a steady stream of no’ until they reached Cicade da Crianca, and he handed them their next clue.
Kelly & Christy realized too late that they hadn’t read their clue correctly again. Upon arriving at Parque de Vaquejada, they were to instruct their taxi to wait, and they didn’t. After searching and searching for another taxi, they realized that their taxi had indeed stayed, they just didn’t see it.
The clue sent teams to the Pit Stop for this leg. Ken & Tina and Mark & Bill were the first teams to leave the Road Block, and raced to the Pit Stop. In a foot race to the mat, Tina & Ken were first, winning ATV’s for each of them. Anthony & Stephanie were the last to arrive, and they were the second team eliminated from The Amazing Race.
The order of the teams:
- Ken & Tina
- Mark & Bill
- Terence & Sarah
- Toni & Dallas
- Aja & Ty
- Nick & Starr
- Kelly & Christy
- Andrew & Dan
- Marissa & Brooke
- Anthony & Stephanie - ELIMINATED

Ever wonder what happens the teams who are eliminated from The Amazing Race do between the time they are eliminated and the group appearance at the finish line? Why, they go to Elimination Station of course. Sounds like a Schoolhouse Rock segment, doesn’t it?
Elimination Station in another nation
Relaxing in comfort, oh what a sensation
Waiting to hear of other teams’ frustrations
Elimination Station is a luxurious house in Acapulco, Mexico, where teams are sequestered after being eliminated from The Amazing Race. Teams live here together until the final leg of the race when they are flown to the finish line to cheer and congratulate the winning team.
Beekeepers Arthur and Anita, the first couple eliminated from this season’s race, couldn’t believe it when they saw the house in Acapulco. They decided that being the first team eliminated had its benefits, as they got their choice of bedrooms.
A new episode of Elimination Station is posted on CBS’s website after week’s episode of The Amazing Race has aired across the country.

I don’t understand why CBS doesn’t allow two-hours for the premiere of The Amazing Race each season. An hour just isn’t enough time to get to know all eleven teams. That being said, last night’s episode was a great start for the Amazing Race’s 13th trip around the world.
Teams started out on the field at the Los Angeles Coliseum. After a welcome and brief introduction by host Phil Keoghan, the teams raced up the stairs to their bags and the first clue, which sent them to Salvador, Brazil. Teams could take one of two flights, an American Airlines flight or a United flight. The American flight was scheduled to get teams in 3 hours before the United flight, but a rain delay cut that lead down by an hour.
Although Aja & Ty got to the airport first, they didn’t find the marked ticket counter, and they, along with a few other teams, waited at the wrong counter. Six teams made the American flight — Mark & Bill, Ken & Tina, Terence & Sarah, Nick & Starr, Ty & Aja, and Kelly & Christy. The other five teams were on the United flight.
Once the planes landed in Salvador, the teams headed to a sandwich shop to receive their next clue. Teams were instructed to select a old, wobbly food cart and wheel it full of food through the streets of Salvador to a Plaza, where a man would be waiting with their next clue.
Terence & Sarah finished this task first and received their clue, directing them to a military base where they spend the night after signing in for one of three departure times for the next morning — 9:00, 9:30 or 9:45.
Four teams left at 9am, headed for the center of the city and their next clue, a detour. In this detour, the teams had to choose between “Hard Way Up†and “Soft Way Downâ€. “Hard Way Up†involved climbing the stairs of a nearby church on their hands and knees. When they reached the top, they would be asked a mystery question. If they got the right answer, they would receive the next clue. A wrong answer required them to repeat the task. In “Soft Way Down†teams had to find an outdoor elevator and climb 240 feet down a cargo net to the street.
Ten of the teams chose “Soft Way Downâ€; only Andrew and Dan chose “Hard Way Upâ€. After climbing the stairs on their hands and knees, they were asked how many stairs they had just climbed. Taking a guess, they wrote down the wrong number and had to make their way back to the bottom of the stairs and start over. Counting the steps this time, they were able to provide the right number.
After teams completed the detour task, they received their final clue of the leg, sending them to the Pit Stop at Forte Sao Marcelo. Siblings Nick & Starr were the first to step on the mat, winning them a trip to Belize to enjoy after the race. Loveable beekeepers Arthur and Anita were last, and they were eliminated from the race.
The eleven teams, in order of finishing:
1. Nick & Starr
2. Ken & Tina
3. Terence & Sarah
4. Mark & Bill
5. Kelly & Christy
6. Toni & Dallas
7. Andrew & Dan
8. Ty & Aja
9. Anthony & Stephanie
10. Marisa & Brooke
11. Arthur & Anita - ELIMINATED
